A color woodcut from the Pennsylvania unit of the WPA Federal Art Project, this poster delivers its message in blunt terms: "Don't jay walk. Watch your step." It belongs to a wave of 1930s street-safety messaging, when automobiles were crowding American city streets and pedestrians were increasingly held responsible for collisions. The Federal Art Project employed artists during the Depression, and its poster units produced public-service designs like this one for civic campaigns. A date stamp on the back reads August 4, 1937, which shows the poster was handled that summer, though its original printing date is less certain.
