Lichen and ivy have taken over the grille and headlamps of this abandoned van, which sits as though it was simply left where it stopped running. Vehicles like this one are a common sight in rural lots, fields and woodland edges, where rust and plant growth slowly reclaim the metal over decades. The picture is worth a closer look for its textures: the flaking orange corrosion, the pale green crust of lichen, and the tangle of ivy that has pushed into the body and cabin openings. Such wrecks also record how quickly machines stop being useful once they are out of service and out of sight.
