A man stands at the front of an automobile, turning its hand crank, while five women wait nearby in front of the Mt. Arlington hotel. Hand-cranking was the usual way to start a car around 1914, and the crank could kick back and injure the person turning it, so the job often fell to a man. The hotel was a resort in Mount Arlington, New Jersey, a place that drew summer visitors. The picture came from the National Photo Company, which produced many commercial views of this kind in the 1910s.
