This pencil, ink, and watercolor drawing is a study for a Pierce-Arrow advertisement, showing a man speaking with three women and another man seated in a car. Dated to about 1915, it reflects how automakers of the period used illustration to sell cars as symbols of status and social polish rather than simply as transportation. Pierce-Arrow, based in Buffalo, New York, was known for expensive, well-built touring cars aimed at affluent buyers. Preliminary sketches like this one show how artists worked out the composition, poses, and mood before the final advertisement was printed.
