The car on this color page is the Edsel, the mid-priced line Ford Motor Company launched in 1957 and named for Edsel Ford, son of company founder Henry Ford. Despite a heavy promotional push, the Edsel sold poorly and was discontinued after the 1960 model year, becoming a common example of marketing failure. This full-page advertisement ran in Look magazine on January 21, 1958, when glossy color pages like this were one of the main ways automakers tried to reach a mass audience.
