Lichen has spread across the side of this abandoned automobile, its pale green and gray patches softening the sheet metal and hiding much of the original paint. The rusted side mirror, still clinging to its bracket, shows how long the car has sat untouched and exposed to weather. Vehicles like this were once common sights in rural fields, scrapyards and along forgotten back roads, where they slowly returned to the soil over decades. Pictures of such wrecks often draw attention to the slow work of nature on human machines, turning a piece of mid-century transportation into something that looks almost like a rock formation.
