The title "Don't Mix 'Em" makes the warning plain before a viewer reaches the image: a skull set against gasoline pumps and a bottle, a pairing meant to link drinking with driving. It is a Federal Art Project poster from 1936, one of the many safety and public health posters the Works Progress Administration produced during the New Deal, when the federal government employed artists to make public messages that could reach people without much text. The Library of Congress holds it in the WPA Poster Collection, and a stamped date of March 1937 on the back suggests it was in circulation or filed within a year of its creation. Its stark, flat graphic style reflects the poster design of the period, where a single striking image was expected to carry the message at a glance.
