Ralph Waldo Emerson's line "Hitch your wagon to a star" gives this 1898 color poster its title and its message: aim high and tie your goals to something lasting. J.C. Leyendecker, early in his career as an illustrator, designed it, and the copyright line credits M.I. Cohen of Chicago. The record files the poster under insurance companies of the 1890s, when color lithographic posters were a common way to sell policies to a broad public. Its 1899 catalog notation suggests it was preserved as a promotional piece from that period.
