This campaign poster leads with its slogan, "J.C. can save America!", which uses Jimmy Carter's initials in place of his name, a style that suited the informal, outsider image he built during his 1976 presidential run. Carter, a former governor of Georgia, won the Democratic nomination that year and went on to defeat incumbent Gerald Ford in November, in an election held amid lingering public distrust after Watergate. The American flag in the subject headings reflects the bicentennial-era patriotism that ran through many campaign designs of the period. The record notes it as one of a series of posters by the same designers, a common practice when campaigns and supporters wanted a consistent look across many printed materials.
