Published in *Puck* on June 28, 1911, this engraving reproduces the signing of the Declaration of Independence for the pages of a New York satirical weekly issued by the firm Keppler & Schwarzmann. The record credits the engraving to Ehrhart, probably Samuel D. Ehrhart, an illustrator active in the early twentieth century, but that attribution comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. Magazine engravings like this let publishers reproduce a famous historical moment in quantity, so the 1776 scene reached readers as a familiar civic image more than a century after the event.
