Ahead of the heavyweight title fight between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries, this color cover from *Puck* casts the bout as a stage melodrama, borrowing the title of Harriet Beecher Stowe's antislavery novel. The drawing by L. M. Glackens, the brother of the painter William Glackens, was published by the magazine's firm, Keppler & Schwarzmann, and it reflects the racial anxiety that surrounded a Black champion facing a white challenger. The fight took place in Reno, Nevada, on July 4, 1910, and Johnson's victory set off riots and violence in cities across the United States. The cover is a useful reminder of how the popular press framed the match before it was fought.
