Uncle Sam, who once pointed a finger from James Montgomery Flagg's 1917 recruiting poster, here asks a different question: have you had your pill today? The design borrows Flagg's "I Want You for U.S. Army" pose and turns a call to enlist into a message about birth control, a subject that was openly debated after the Food and Drug Administration approved oral contraceptives in 1960. Printed in color around 1968 and credited to Gross National Product, it shows how poster makers of the period reworked familiar wartime imagery to comment on social change.
