Puck's September 1, 1880 issue carried this color lithograph, whose title, "H. Bergh's influence on Uncle Sam - no bull fight!", points to the campaign against animal blood sports. Henry Bergh, the New York philanthropist who founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was a prominent opponent of such contests, and the cartoon uses Uncle Sam to press that cause in the satirical style the weekly was known for. The record credits J.A. Wales with the design and also tags the print with Indian cartoons, but that data comes from an old caption card and is unverified, so those details deserve some caution.
