John Bull, the stout caricature who stood for the British nation, faces Napoleon Bonaparte in this etching, and the title makes his defiance the point. The print dates to December 1803, months after Britain renewed its war with France in May and the Peace of Amiens fell apart, when invasion threats across the Channel were a common topic. London publisher William Holland issued it as a hand-coloured etching, and prints like this were typically sold in shop windows, where passersby gathered to read the captions. Its tone of stubborn national pride was typical of the period's satire.
