The title sets the scene: a couple slipping away while a sleeping father and a bulldog stand in the way, all written in phonetic dialect. Issued by Currier & Ives in New York in 1885, it belongs to the Darktown series, a run of comic lithographs that mocked Black Americans through exaggerated features and minstrel-style humor. The series was popular in the 1880s and 1890s, and historians now study it as a record of the racist stereotypes of its time. The Library of Congress cataloged the print with reference to Gale Research's catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives.
