Titled as a mock coat of arms, this November 1819 etching turns the language of heraldry against the radical reformers who were then pressing for parliamentary reform. George Cruikshank, one of the most prolific caricaturists of the period, made it by etching and then adding hand color, a process that let satirical prints reach buyers quickly and cheaply. The months after the Peterloo meeting of August 1819 were a tense time for the government and its critics, and prints like this one reflected the bitter public argument over reform. The catalog record notes that its date and other details come from an unverified caption card, so the exact circumstances should be checked against other sources.
