The prime lobster" is a hand-colored engraving dated January 1828, drawn and engraved by William Heath and published by J. McIan. Heath was one of the most active caricaturists in London in the 1820s, and his prints were sold in print shops, where hand coloring made each impression a little different from the next. Like much British satire of the period, the print uses a single bold image and a pointed title to comment on public life. The cartoon's meaning depends on contemporary references that the record does not spell out, so viewers should read it as a snapshot of the political humor of its moment.
