Santa leads two reindeer toward a sleigh already heaped with gifts in this color drawing, which William Steig made as the cover of The New Yorker's Christmas Eve issue of December 24, 1966. Steig contributed hundreds of drawings to the magazine over several decades, and his work was known for its loose, gently comic line and affection for ordinary people and animals. He later became a celebrated children's author and illustrator, and *Sylvester and the Magic Pebble* won the Caldecott Medal in 1970.
