Blood Will Tell" takes its title from an old proverb holding that a person's breeding or heredity will eventually show, and the print's record gives no further description of its scene, so its meaning rests on that phrase. Issued by Currier & Ives in New York in 1879, it belongs to the firm's large output of inexpensive lithographs, which sold widely to households across the country during the 1870s. The Library of Congress holds it, and it is listed as no. 0638 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of the firm's work, a useful reference for placing it among the firm's other prints.
