A pun on the legend of Lady Godiva gives this hand-colored etching its title. A Peeping Tom figure spies on a fashionable evening party, or "rout," where guests play Pope Joan, a card game of the period. The inscription "Js. Gy. d: et f:" credits James Gillray, the most celebrated caricaturist of the 1790s, with both designing and etching the plate, which H. Humphrey published in London on March 12, 1796. Gillray used bawdy humor and exaggerated figures like these to mock fashion, gambling, and the manners of high society, and the costumes and expressions here reward a close look.
