Few early photographs show their subject as plainly as this 1842 calotype of lace, where the fabric's fine openwork and delicate threads make the process's capacity for detail obvious. William Henry Fox Talbot introduced the calotype and patented it in 1841, and its paper negatives allowed multiple prints from a single exposure, unlike the one-of-a-kind daguerreotype. Lace was a favorite test subject for early photographers because its intricate, mostly flat patterns challenged exposure and sharpness, and it also recalled a craft still widely practiced by hand. Worth noticing is how the translucent threads turn into a web of light and shadow, making the picture both a study of textile design and a demonstration of the new medium.
