Drawn in pencil and Chinese white on a small sheet of olive paper, this work carries the exclamatory title "Surrender!!!" and is tied in its record to a cavalry clash at Aldie, Virginia, on June 17, 1863. That fight took place as Lee's army was moving north into Pennsylvania, and Union and Confederate horsemen met in the Loudoun Valley during the opening weeks of the Gettysburg campaign. The record also lists officers, soldiers and prisoners among its subjects, a reminder that mounted engagements often ended with captured men and that scenes of surrender held strong interest for wartime audiences.
