Elk-horn spoons, carved from antler, are the subject of this c1923 photograph of Tolowa material culture. The Tolowa lived along the Pacific coast and river valleys of far northwestern California and southwestern Oregon, where utensils like these served everyday cooking and eating. Edward S. Curtis included the image in *The North American Indian*, in volume 13, page 106. Curtis often arranged his object studies to show tools as he wished them seen, so the spoons read as both working implements and deliberate compositions.
