Among Dorothea Lange's many pictures of California farm laborers, this one is set apart by its inclusion of a dog alongside a group of migrant workers and children in Winters, a fruit-growing town in Yolo County. Lange made it in May 1935 while working for the Resettlement Administration, the New Deal agency that later became the Farm Security Administration. The title "Fruit tramp" was a common term for itinerant workers who followed the harvests from orchard to orchard, and the picture shows how such families lived close to their pets and possessions while they moved from job to job.
