Titled "Cutting secale," this scene uses the Latin name for rye, a cereal that was not a staple of the Philippine lowlands, so the label may reflect a cataloguer's naming rather than the crop in the field. The photograph is credited to Dean C. Worcester and/or P.L. Sherman and dated 1899 or 1900, when Worcester was traveling the islands as a member of the Philippine Commission after the Spanish-American War. Photographs from that period often recorded farm work and everyday life for American audiences curious about newly acquired territory, so the image is best read as a document of grain harvesting during the early American colonial era.
