This photograph shows a single-cylinder Cadillac from the 1904-05 model years, one of the early cars from a company that began building automobiles in Detroit in 1902. Those single-cylinder machines were light, simple runabouts that helped establish Cadillac's reputation for reliable engineering before the marque moved on to larger, multi-cylinder designs. The picture was made around 1944, four decades after the car was built, so it records an automobile already regarded as old when it was photographed. It was taken by the Grogan Photo Company of Danville, Illinois, and the print was registered for copyright, which is why its maker is identified.
