Edward S. Curtis himself is the figure at the center of this picture, which casts him as an explorer and ethnologist heading into the field in 1904. The image is a halftone reproduction published in 1985 as an illustration in Barbara A. Davis's biography of Curtis, where it appears on page 37. Curtis spent much of his career recording Native peoples of North America, and his work among the Navajo in Arizona, with its focus on spiritual life, reflects his ambition to document traditions he believed were disappearing. The image is worth noticing for how it presents the photographer as the adventurer rather than the people he photographed.
