Charles M. Russell's *A Bad Hoss* shows a cowboy contending with a bucking horse, a subject he returned to often. The 1904 painting appears here as a color lithograph from about 1905, and the copy was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why it is held in the Library's collections. Russell had worked on Montana ranges before he turned to painting and sculpture full time, and his scenes of cowboys and broncos drew on that firsthand experience. Reproductions like this one carried his image of the working West to viewers far from the ranges.
