This photograph shows the tomb of Walt Whitman, the poet nicknamed "the good gray poet," in Harleigh Cemetery in Camden, New Jersey. The nickname came from William Douglas O'Connor's 1866 pamphlet defending Whitman after he was dismissed from a federal post over *Leaves of Grass*, and it stuck long after. Whitman spent his last years in Camden, and he died there in 1892. The large stone monument, set in a quiet cemetery across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, shows how he was honored by admirers who saw him as a central figure of American literature.
