A horse with a chronic cough and labored breathing is the subject of this comic lithograph, whose title plays on "the heaves," a common nineteenth-century name for what is now called heaves, a chronic lung condition in horses. Thomas Worth, who signed the image, was one of the best-known caricaturists working for Currier & Ives, and the firm sold his humorous horse and street scenes to a broad middle-class public. In the 1870s, when horses still pulled most city freight and passenger traffic, such jokes spoke to a daily reality that many buyers knew firsthand.
