Titled "A Very Serious Case," this c1905 print uses its name to set up a joke: children at play are staged to look like a solemn matter of importance. Humorous photographs like this were popular in the 1900s, when commercial studios produced staged scenes of children, couples and everyday mishaps for sale as novelty prints. This one was issued by the Photograph Company of America of Chicago, and its catalog number, 1328, shows it was part of a numbered series. Its survival in the Library of Congress reflects how such ephemeral comic pictures were preserved as records of popular tastes in the early twentieth century.
