Snowshoes, rather than hiking boots, set this scene apart. The record places the outing at Bellevue in Intervale, a village in the Mount Washington Valley of northern New Hampshire. The women on the porch appear ready to set off across the snow, a glimpse of the winter leisure that visitors to the White Mountains enjoyed in the 1940s. The valley's setting near the mountains drew walkers and winter sports enthusiasts, and pictures like this one show how such outings were staged for the camera. The porch is worth noticing too, since it marks the threshold between the lodging and the trail.
