Sorting raw hides and cutting away the hooves and ears marks the rough first stage of turning animal skins into leather. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that issued large numbers of stereoscope views, produced this card around 1915 as part of its leather series. Before tanning, hides were graded by quality and trimmed of parts that could not be used, work done largely by hand in this period. Stereographs like this one were viewed through a stereoscope, which gave home audiences a sense of depth as they looked at American industries.
