Hides stretched out to dry on a loft give this stereograph its subject, one stage in turning raw skins into leather. The card is from a Leather series issued by Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm known for stereoscopic views sold to home viewers in the 1910s. Drying lofts were typically well ventilated, since moving air helped skins dry evenly and kept them from spoiling before finishing. The scene reflects the scale of American tanning in this period, when leather went into shoes, harness, and saddles.
