Few corners in Old Havana carry a name as specific as the Casa de la Cruz Verde, which stands where Calle Amargura meets Calle Mercaderes. The name refers to a green cross, a sign long associated with pharmacies, so the building's identity is tied to the trade it once housed. Photographs like this one, taken between the mid-1930s and the mid-1940s, record the colonial streetscape of Havana as commerce and daily life moved through it. The Historic Core, with its narrow streets and stone façades, has since been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which gives this view added value as a record of the city before later changes.
