This photograph shows the inner courtyard of Casa Ratgeb on Via Pignolo in Bergamo, a street in the city's upper town lined with palaces and townhouses from the Renaissance and later centuries. The house takes its name from the Ratgeb family associated with it, and its courtyard was a typical setting for the arcades, stone staircases, and well heads of Lombard urban domestic architecture. The print was issued by Alinari, the Florentine photography firm founded in 1852 that produced large numbers of views of Italian monuments and architecture for travelers, students, and collectors. The caption card leaves the date unrecorded, so the exact year of the picture is unknown.
