Across the Shatt al-Arab, this view from Abadan Island takes in a stand of date palms on the Iranian side and, far off, the Iraqi bank of the river. The Shatt al-Arab forms where the Tigris and Euphrates meet before flowing into the Persian Gulf, and palm groves like these lined its banks for generations. Abadan later became known for the large oil refinery built there by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in the early twentieth century. The caption card gives no date, so the scene is best read as a general view of the riverfront.
