Union general James Shields is the figure at the center of this 1862 lithograph, which shows his troops in the fighting around Winchester, Virginia. Shields, an Irish-born officer who had been wounded in the Mexican War and had served as a U.S. senator, commanded forces in the Shenandoah Valley campaign against Stonewall Jackson's Confederates. The New York firm Currier & Ives issued inexpensive lithographs like this one to a public eager for images of commanders and battles during the early years of the Civil War.
