Few pairings in early Soviet history carry as much weight as the one shown here, with Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin photographed together in 1922. That year Stalin became General Secretary of the Communist Party, a post that gave him growing control over party appointments, while Lenin's health was already failing. Lenin suffered his first stroke that May and died in January 1924. The picture is worth studying as a record of the leadership on the eve of the power struggle that followed Lenin's illness.
