Medicine bags, the focus of this Edward S. Curtis picture, were carried by Piegan (Blackfeet) people in Montana to hold sacred objects and healing materials tied to personal spiritual protection. Curtis made the image around 1910 for *The North American Indian*, a multi-volume project running from 1907 to 1930 that aimed to record Native cultures he believed were disappearing. This print appeared in volume 6 of the series, and its subject headings cover both health practices and ceremonial life, which makes it useful for understanding how these objects were understood at the time.
