Pipe bags, which the back of this print labels as tobacco pouches, held tobacco and the smoking pipe, and Dakota makers often decorated them with beadwork, quillwork, or painted designs that carried meaning for their owners. Edward S. Curtis photographed them around 1908 for *The North American Indian*, his multi-volume project documenting Native peoples of North America, which ran from 1907 to 1930. This view appeared in volume 3. Curtis believed many of these traditions were disappearing, so records of objects like these were central to his effort to preserve them.
