A raised thumb gives this picture its name, a small gesture of apparent good cheer as Joseph Stalin confers with Vyacheslav Molotov, his foreign affairs chief, during the Yalta Conference in February 1945. The two are shown in private talk, the kind of consultation that took place between formal sessions while the Allied leaders worked through postwar plans. Yalta brought Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill together in Crimea to settle questions about Germany, Poland and the shape of the postwar world. Images like this one show the working side of those meetings, where informal exchanges often mattered nearly as much as the official sessions.
