Taken in April 1977, this color portrait is identified in its title as a Kurd from Saleh El-Deen, a province in northern Iraq with a substantial Kurdish population. The photograph is by Mokhless Al-Hariri and is held in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. It dates from a turbulent period for Iraq's Kurds, after a 1970 autonomy agreement with Baghdad broke down and fighting resumed in the mid-1970s. Portraits made during those years give a personal counterpart to the political news of the time.
