Dated May 14, 1864, this pencil drawing shows Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, a small crossroads county seat caught up in the Overland Campaign. Fighting around the town began on May 8 and continued for about two weeks, tearing up its fields and farms. The drawing's subject is African American domestic life, a reminder that Black families lived through the war in the path of the armies and that the conflict upended their homes and routines. Given to the Library in 1919 as part of its Civil War drawing collection, it offers a quick glimpse of a place that became shorthand for the campaign's heavy losses.
