The title, "Someone talked!", names the poster's warning outright, and the signed artist, Siebel, marks it as one of the Office of War Information's early wartime designs. Printed in Washington in 1942 and catalogued as OWI poster no. 18, it addresses a danger that the Office's security campaigns returned to again and again: a careless remark overheard by the wrong listener. The poster belongs to the period when the government was turning propaganda and information work into a coordinated effort, and its message about secrecy was meant to reach ordinary workers and families at home. Its subject headings, which list both communications and covert operations, show how closely the poster tied everyday talk to enemy espionage.
