Unlike the other plates in this series, this one is dedicated to the First Crusade, the campaign that Pope Urban II called at Clermont in 1095. It reproduces a page from a French manuscript held at the Bibliothèque nationale, and the 1955 color printing recreates the original painted scene. The crusaders reached Jerusalem and captured the city in July 1099, and the expedition shaped relations between Western Europe and the Near East for generations. Medieval chronicles of these events were often illustrated in this way, so the plate offers a look at how later readers imagined the crusade.
