A working design rather than a finished cover, this piece is rendered in color pencil and graphite on tracing paper and was made for an April issue of *Liberty*, the popular American weekly. The translucent support suggests the artist was sketching layouts and testing color before the image went to print. In the mid-1920s, illustrated covers like this one were central to magazines competing for newsstand buyers, so a strong, instantly readable image mattered. The sheet comes from the Donald D. Walker collection in the Library's Prints and Photographs Division and shows the steps between concept and printed cover.
