Among the many illustrated pages of the Americana board, this one is a working drawing rather than a finished print: a color pencil and graphite sketch on tracing paper, made for a December cover of Liberty magazine in the mid-1920s. Liberty was a large-circulation weekly, and its covers were commissioned from illustrators who worked up preliminary designs like this one before the final painting went to press. Cover drafts of this kind show how a magazine's art was shaped by editors and layout decisions, and the tracing paper hints at the stages between sketch and printed page. The drawing comes from the Donald D. Walker collection in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, which holds many commercial art studies from the 1920s.
