The Libyan Sibyl, a prophetess from classical tradition, is the subject here, and this card reproduces a painting of her by Hermann tom Ring, a German artist of the later sixteenth century. The sibyls were a popular subject in Renaissance art, most famously in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling, where the Libyan Sibyl also appears. This photographic reproduction was made between 1910 and 1930, so it preserves a sixteenth-century work as it was seen in the early twentieth century, when such prints were widely circulated for study and teaching.
