Here the Yellow Kid, the ragged street boy from Richard F. Outcault's earlier Hogan's Alley strips, shares a page with Buster Brown, Outcault's well-dressed boy from the *New York Herald*, along with Brown's dog Tige and his sister Mary Jane. The catalog subjects point to a dream setting, which lets Outcault bring two of his famous characters together in one scene. Both characters were central to American newspaper comics in the early 1900s, and by 1907 Buster Brown was a popular comic-strip star whose image also appeared on merchandise. The drawing is done in ink and watercolor over pencil, so its color and line work show how hand-finished newspaper and magazine comics of the period could be.
